Hunting Season 2008

From September to November 2008, young Canberran arts practitioners will descend upon Belconnen Theatre to present a series of collaborative cross-arts performances as part of The Hunting Season, an initiative developed with the support of Belconnen Community Services, the Foundation for Young Australians, Youth InterACT and the Street Theatre’s Made in Canberra season.

In 2007, Belconnen Theatre hosted the WET Season, a season of theatre productions by young and emerging theatre artists from March – September. From the artists and groups involved in the WET Season, a smaller collective of emerging writers, directors, actors and producers entitled the Hunting Party was assembled.

The FYA provided us with $40 000 as part of their LaunchPad community development initiative. From talking to arts-enthusiastic young people, we discovered that the young arts community existed in two tiers or streams. Stream one consists of  young artists or arts-enthusiastic young people with fewer than two years’ practice, who would like to be involved in the practising arts scene but are still developing networks within their artistic field, or are unsure how to access artistic opportunities. Stream two consists of artists with more established networks within their art form who are eager to develop networks and collaborate with artists from other backgrounds and disciplines.

Both streams of artists experience difficulty in promoting their work to audiences outside their immediate networks, and are looking for opportunities to either begin or to further expand their arts practice. Using the money we received from the FYA, and working with the tireless assistance of the late Jan Wawrzyncak, we have created a performance season that caters to both streams of arts-enthusiastic young people. The Hunting Season is a way to generate not just more opportunity for young people to be involved in the arts, but more opportunity to expand their practice.

The season will feature a launch week, which will involve a series of one-off events such as The Hive variety night and a Poetry Slam; a series of double bills including short plays by students from Copland College, Narrabundah College and the ANU as well as commissioned works involving artists from different disciplines; The Playground Young Playright competition in which the winners’ play will be performed professionally; and Damned if You Duo 4, a duologue festival featuring original work by Canberra writers. The season will be an explosion of artistic activity, and will showcase the talent, creativity and passion of Canberra’s young artists.
